Unifor Local 302 Collective Agreement

Schelgal workers are ready to take legal action in their fight for a respectful collective agreement, although the employer threatens to take legal action and impose the police. Unifor Local 302 represents nearly 400 members at the Village of Glendale Crossing in London and pinehaven Nursing Home in Kitchener and Unifor Local 504 represents nearly 250 members at the Village of Wentworth Heights in Hamilton. Together with Local 2458 in Windsor, these two premises form Unifor`s Master Negotiations Team. The union is committed to returning to the bargaining table as soon as the employer has made a real commitment to address understaffing. However, the employer believes that the best way to correct understaffing is to reward workers with ”Schlegal points”, a reward system for purchasing items. ”It`s no longer just about understaffed work in long-term care homes,” said Nancy McMurphy, President of Local 302. ”The real challenge is often to employ two to three people on a given day. Residents are not receiving the care they deserve, and employees feel hopeless and defeated. Unifor calls on all parties to support the NDP`s new anti-shorf law. Canada`s fiscal updates indicate a future economic recovery. The 302 local members must be removed from any of the following units to qualify for group rates: Unifor is Canada`s largest union in the private sector and represents 315,000 employees in all major sectors of the economy. The union stands up for all workers and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and seeks to create progressive change for a better future.

”Having a reward system to combat understaffing is not only an insult to workers, but also to residents. Understaffing in LTC homes is a systemic problem and a reward system does nothing to relieve the burden or stress placed on workers trying to provide optimal care to residents of these facilities,” McMurphy said. Unifor submitted to the provincial government in December 2019 a report entitled Caring in Crisis: Long-Term Care PSW From the Ontario Shortage, which describes the systemic shortage of personnel workers (PSW) in Ontario Canada`s tax update does not support all employees of the airline. Unifor Group Insurance is also available to retirees, spouses, dependent children and Unifor staff. ”Our members feel frustrated, underrated and totally despised by the employer,” said Glenn Westoby, president of Local 504. ”Schlegel continues to pay wages below industry standards, although he has repeatedly told the union that he wants to be a leader in the long-term care sector.
